The two stressed the importance of the peaceful development of cross-straits relations and agreed to take positive measures to improve them.

Hu Jintao said cross-straits ties have witnessed positive changes recently and a trend for further development. He said authorities on both sides should work together to build mutual trust and create a win-win situation for people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

Hu Jintao hoped the two sides could enhance the current exchanges and resume negotiations to pursue peace in the Taiwan Straits and happiness for the people.

On historical issues, Hu Jintao said the two sides should put peace and people's benefit first and should look for solutions. Hu said the road to peaceful development would become wider with the efforts of both sides.

Hu Jintao said people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to the Chinese nationality, which is preparing for a bright future of revitalization.

Lien Chan said the happiness for people on both sides should be built on peace. The two sides should keep improving their cooperation on economy, culture, education and security to raise their relationship to a new level.

CPC General Secretary Hu Jintao first met with then Chairman of the Kuomintang, Lien Chan, in 2005. The meeting was described as historic, as it was the first one between the leaders of the two parties in 60 years and paved the way for further cooperation across the Taiwan Straits.
