The 63rd Frankfurt International Book Fair officially opened in Germany on Oct. 12. The China International Publishing Group attended the fair with the same theme as last year: "Reading China." With its exquisite multi-language books, elegant exhibition hall and professional design and layout of the booth, CIPG became the focus of the event. The afternoon ceremony for the release of the English version of Why and How the CPC Works in China on the90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China attracted great attention from publishers and readers from around the world.

Why and How the CPC Works in China is an attempt by CIPG to introduce China and the CPC to the world. The book answers questions on subjects of general interest in a narrative way and lets readers draw their own conclusions from the stories and photos. To maintain objectivity and balance, the book quotes extensively from well-known domestic and international figures and media. It not only broadens domestic readers' vision and knowledge of the CPC, but also relates to foreign readers' reading habits and interests. During the release ceremony, the book became one of the high points of the exhibition. It opened a window for the worldwide audience to understand the CPC. The CIPG will also hold a seminar and book-offering ceremony in Trier, hometown of Marxism founder Karl Marx, and promote a variety of books.

For this year's book fair, CIPG has carefully chosen nearly 900 recently published titles. Among them, foreign language books account for 90 percent, with over 600 in English, over 40 in German, over 20 in French and nearly 70 in other languages such as Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Indonesian. These books cover six categories, namely contemporary China, Chinese culture, Chinese literature, Chinese language, traditional Chinese medicine and children's books.

This is the 31st time that the CIPG participates in the Frankfurt Book Fair. It is the first time the CIPG subsidiaries participate in the fair since the group restructured them into business enterprises last year.

As the first and largest foreign-language publishing and distribution organization in China, CIPG has been closely following the needs of national and international readers. The group annually publishes 3,000 titles in over 40 languages, including 24 types of printed periodicals in nine languages. It also operates over 30 websites, including China.org.cn. It distributes its books and periodicals in 180 countries and regions around the world. Its publications account for more than half of China's exports of books and periodicals.

Employing new media and technologies such as digital publishing and distributing content on wireless devices is another highlight for the CIPG's exhibition at the fair. In recent years, with rapid development of new media and new technologies, digital publishing and wireless devices have drew increasing attention from the publishing industry and became more and more widely accepted. CIPG has increased investment in the research and development of these technologies. In its booth, CIPG staff demonstrated to the readers its apps – available on the Apple App Store – displaying English content such as China.org.cn, Beijing Review, China Pictorial and China Today. Booth visitors also saw e-books including Why and How the CPC Works in China, available at Amazon and other online bookstores, and experienced the CIPG's multi-lingual journal databases, photo galleries and other digital products. Surely, the new technologies will continue to serve the ever-changing needs of readers of every kind.

Guo Xiaoyong, Executive Vice President of the China International Publishing Group (CIPG), talked to a reporter at the 63rd Frankfurt International Book Fair which opened in Germany on Oct. 12. [China.org.cn]

Frankfurt International Book Fair is famous for providing a platform for the trading of publishing rights. In recent years, CIPG has participated in nearly a hundred trade talks each year, and a number of publishers from around the world have expressed their intention to purchasing publishing rights from the group. CIPG, known to be the "national team" of China's foreign-language publishing industry, has maintained lead in the billboard of exporting publishing rights over the years. The publishing group expects another bumper crop in trades during this year's fair.

According to statistics, over 7,500 publishers around the world participated in this year's Frankfurt International Book Fair. Among them, over 200 are from China, increasing slightly from last year. CIPG's executive vice president, Guo Xiaoyong, said CIPG this year will carry out the corporation-oriented restructuring of its subsidiaries. Through forming a new international media group, the company will assume the leading role in China's "go-global" strategy for books and periodicals.
