About the Author
Xi Jinping, born in 1953, spent his early school years in Beijing. In his teens during the Cultural Revolution, he volunteered to go as an “educated youth” to a remote village in the northwestern province of Shaanxi. He lived and worked there from 1969 to 1975, and eventually became head of the village. He first graduated from university with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, and later qualified as a doctor of laws from Tsinghua University.
From the 1980s to 2002 he served as a county official, then went on to become top leader in the provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and the municipality of Shanghai – all situated along China’s eastern coast, a region known for its dynamic economic growth. In these positions he gained experience as a local leader. In 2002 he moved to the capital city of Beijing, and for the next ten years he served as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee, and the vice president of China. He was elected general secretary of the CPC Central Committee in 2012 and president of the People’s Republic of China in 2013.
