China's mobile web users will reach 720 million by 2013 and outnumber those using PCs, according to a new projection by the DCCI Internet Statistics Center.
As such, wireless Internet access has become the new battleground for major websites and internet companies.
Wang Zhenhua, general manager of Internet business department of classifieds website Ganji.com, said the number of active users of the site's mobile client has surpassed 30 million, and by next year will catch that of users logging on through PCs.
Other leading companies like Sina, Tencent, Sohu and Dianping have already gained solid footholds in the mobile market and begun vying for shares.
Figures from Paidai.com show that China Mobile web users have surpassed 400 million this month. By the end of this year, the retail business volume of mobile e-commerce will reach 12.5 billion yuan (US$1.96 billion), five times that of the year before.
China's business press carried the story above on Tuesday.
