The World IoT Top 500 Summit 2024, a key event of the World Internet of Things Convention (WIOTC), was held in Beijing on July 19, unveiling a list of the industry's leading companies.

Huawei topped the list this year, with Haier Group returning to the top 10. Newcomers like Origin Quantum joined, while Qualcomm, Microsoft, CASIC, IBM, Siemens and Intel maintained leading positions.

The World IoT Ranking List Top 500, now in its eighth year, has become a leading global indicator of IoT and digital economy innovation, recognizing digital economy enterprises worldwide, according to He Xuming, chairman of the WIOTC executive committee.

The summit, themed "An Intelligently Interconnected World for A Win-Win Future," focused on promoting innovation in the IoT industry. Organizers said the event aimed to boost cooperation between governments and businesses while recognizing top performers in IoT and digital technology.

Attendees included government officials, ambassadors, diplomats, representatives from international organizations, and business associations from over 40 countries, including China, France, South Africa, Pakistan, Malta, Nepal, Portugal and Türkiye.

He emphasized in his keynote speech that advanced IoT technologies are accelerating global connectivity and industrial transformation.

According to GSMA Intelligence, IoT connections will reach almost 25 billion globally by 2025, up from 10.3 billion in 2018.

In China alone, IoT connections are estimated to exceed 3 billion, with a growth rate of over 30%, according to He.

He said communication technologies supporting the IoT economy are advancing rapidly, moving from 5G to 6G, as well as Starlink and quantum networks. This change is creating new forms of connectivity and boosting productivity in China through new networks, economic models and market systems.

The chairman called for accelerating the digital economy's transformation and upgrading, urging countries to collaboratively build a global IoT digital economy market. He emphasized the need for innovative cooperation to bridge global divides and achieve a win-win future.

Khalil-ur-Rahman Hashmi, Pakistan's ambassador to China, underscored the summit's theme, highlighting the importance of information technology in connecting nations and businesses.

"Emerging digital technologies, including big data, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, have revolutionized the way we work and live," said Hashmi. "This revolution is ushering in a new era, creating a digitally connected and interconnected world. Thanks to these cutting-edge technologies, we are witnessing a global digital landscape characterized by unprecedented levels of data generation and analysis."

Hashmi said he hopes for more cooperation between Pakistan and China in the IT sector, noting China's rapid technological progress.

Zhang Hua, vice chairman of the WIOTC executive committee, announced that the next World IoT Convention will be held from Nov. 3-5 in Beijing. The event will feature the release of the world's first Global Intelligent Connectivity Digital Economy White Paper, providing strategic insights for the innovative development of the IoT digital economy.
