General Motors China is planning to recall 14 of its models due to a faulty heated windshield washer system, according to an announcement by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ).

This is the second GM recall in China over the past two months. On June 9, GM China announced it was recalling 3,167 Cadillac CTS models and 1,032 Escalade models manufactured between 2007 and 2009. Earlier, General Motors recalled more than 1.5 million vehicles worldwide.

According to the announcement by GAQSIQ, the heated windshield washer system, which helps to prevent frost on the windshield in winter, may catch fire in extreme cases.

Bai Hua, General Manager of GM China Public Affairs and Communications, said the defect would not affect the vehicles' overall function. Simply removing the heating element can solve the problem. Bai said GM vehicles would run perfectly without the heating system installed.

Zeng Zhiling, an auto industry analyst, told the Global Times that the windshield washer system is not a security threat. Even though many GM models are involved this time, the recall won't have much of an impact on GM's Chinese market, he said.

The models involved in this recall include Buick Lucerne 2009, Cadillac DTS, the Hummer H2, Cadillac Escalade ESV and EXT made between 2007 and 2009, Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL, Saturn Outlook, as well as the Chevrolet Traverse made in 2009.

Yu Jing, a customer service representative of GM China's Customer Support Center, told the Global Times that in addition to free repairs on the Cadillac CTS models and Escalade models recalled June 9, each vehicle owner will get 700 yuan ($103.24) in compensation.
