A total of 37 painting and calligraphy works by an established Chinese female artist were put on show Saturday to celebrate the upcoming 10th anniversary of Macao's return to China, which falls on Dec. 20.
A special painting named "Ode to Peace" depicts a large piece of dark green lotus leaf standing upright against red morning sunshine. The foregrounded lotus leaf was unfolded to occupy nearly half of the picture.
"It is meant to symbolize our motherland's capability of supporting the flowery Macao," Wang said, citing that lotus is the region flower of Macao Special Administrative Region.
Macao has been enjoying brisk economic and social development since it returned to China on Dec. 20, 1999.
Wang Yongli, from the hub of Chinese brush drawing Yangzhou city in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, is renowned for paintings of lotus leaf.
Some of Wang's caricature-like portraits brought western oil paining elements into works, captioned by easily understood but deep-going life reflections. One of them read, the world in wanting of diversity is short of freedom.
Du Zhenglin, member of Chinese Fine Artists Association said Wang's employment of large block colors helped create abstract thinkings with philosophical implications.
Also on show are her special contributions to Beijing Olympics in 2008. The works displayed the athlete portraits with great motion and intensity.
Artist Wu Dongkui said, "Wang's works are distinctive in fine art community since she blended her artistic sensibility with Chinese painting traditions."
The week-long art show was held in Wu Dongkui Art Gallery in Beijing's city proper. The gallery was built by Wu Dongkui in 2007 and is open to public free of charge.
