Int'l community continues condoling with China on deadly landslide

Leaders of many foreign countries and international organizations have recently sent condolences to China over deadly landslides in northwest China.

As of?Friday afternoon, the death toll of the downpour-triggered Sunday disaster in Zhouqu County of northwest China's Gansu Province reached 1,156, with?588 still missing. Extensive rescue and relief efforts are continuing.

While offering their heartfelt condolences, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed confidence that the courageous and persevering Chinese people will surely overcome this natural disaster.

Nepali President Ram Baran Yadav and Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal conveyed their deep grief over the great loss of lives and properties in the calamity, and wished that the Chinese government would achieve all-around success in the rescue and recovery efforts.

On behalf of the Thai government and people, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva voiced wholehearted sympathies with the Chinese people, adding that his country is willing to offer help.

Communicating to the Chinese people his deep grief and condolences, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said he is confident the Chinese government will prevail over the catastrophe.

Burundi President Pierre Nkuruzinza delivered to China his sympathies and condolences for the great loss of lives and properties in the disaster, and expressed confidence that with the leadership of the Chinese government, it is certain that local residents will surmount the tragedy and rebuild their homes.

Chairman Yahya bin Mahfoud al-Manthri of the Omani State Council, President Laurent Gbagbo of Cote d'Ivoire and President Ian Khama of Botswana also conveyed their grief and condolences to the Chinese people, especially those victimized in the landslide.

In their messages, President Nicholas Joseph Orville Liverpool and Prime Minster Roosevelt Skerrit of Dominica also said they believe that the Chinese people will definitely triumph over the disaster and start rebuilding soon under the guidance of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government.

Such sentiment also came from Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer of Antigua and Barbuda, who expressed confidence that China is certain to weather the difficulties and achieve a final victory in the rescue and relief efforts.

Other leaders having condoled with China included Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva, Finnish President Tarja Halonen, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.

The latest condolences added to those offered by a number of leaders of other foreign countries and international organizations, including the United Nations, the United States, Canada, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Japan and Singapore.
