Population relocation planned in Beijing

A large scale population relocation is going to be launched in Beijing's Xicheng district in 2013, expected to relieve the population pressure of the capital city's central area and improve the living standard of residents, China News Service reported on Wednesday.
Xicheng district is the political and economical core area of China, where the central government headquarters, Zhongnanhai, and China's most important financial regulation center, Beijing financial street, are located. The district is now facing the problems of the high population density distributed among cultural and historical heritage protection areas and the poor quality of outdated housing.
According to an official from the district's housing construction committee, the population redistribution plan will affect six areas of the district, where some of the residents have to move out to decrease the population density.
A total of 250 hectares in five areas of the city have been designated to build resettlement houses which can accommodate at least 75,000 people.
Initial research of the population relocation will start this year, and the full-scale relocation will be commenced once the resettlement projects are finished in succession by 2013.
After the population redistribution, more public service facilities will be introduced to the district to further develop its cultural industry and to improve local residents' living conditions, said the official.
Beijing's population has been exponentially increasing in recent years. The past two years saw a population increase of more than 600,000 migrant people per annul. Many districts have included population management into their government reports.
