A private car with a two-month-old baby inside was stolen in Changchun, Jilin Province, at about 7:20 a.m. yesterday morning, March 4, 2013. The car has been retrieved by local police this morning, yet the baby is still missing, China.org.cn learned.

China Central Television reported the case yesterday and the post was then widely circulated on both social networking and blogging sites. Tens of millions of re-tweets from Internet users and celebrities contain prayers for the baby surnamed Xu and ask the perpetrator to surrender.

Jilin's Governor Bayin Chaolu, Party Chief Wang Rulin and Police Chief Huang Guanchun asked all police officers to put the case at the top of their list. The provincial police department also notified the neighboring provinces of Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia of the case and asked for help.

All of Changchun City's policemen and detectives launched a citywide search for the baby and the car that went on all night, with the help of the city's citizens, volunteers, Internet users, monitors, media channels and –platforms, as well as other advanced police technologies.

At 8 a.m. this morning, March 5, the car was located in the countryside of Gongzhuling City, Jinlin Province. Police confirmed the vehicle was indeed the stolen one, but the baby was still missing. Police stated they would continue the search.

The baby's parents reportedly left the jeep to visit their self-owned store without taking out the car keys, causing the car to be stolen with the infant still onboard. The father explained the baby was sleeping and their store had no heating inside. In order to let the baby sleep well inside the agreeably warm car, Xu and his wife temporarily left the car to light the fire in the store, before bringing the baby inside. However, some ten minutes later, the father went outside and found his car had been stolen.
