In the first three quarters of 2024, Beijing's cultural enterprises above the designated size achieved a total revenue of 1.59 trillion yuan (US$219.89 billion), accounting for 16% of the national total. The total profit was 177.62 billion yuan, up 8% year on year.
Beijing ranked first nationwide for eight consecutive years in the cultural industry development index released by the Cultural Industries Institute of the Renmin University of China, said Zeng Fanwen, executive president of the institute.
Enterprises with new cultural business formats registered a total revenue of 1.14 billion yuan, up 11.7% year on year, accounting for 71.6% of the city's total.
Artificial intelligence large models have been applied to promote cultural and technological enterprises in areas such as literature, art, film and television, and games. A total of 94 large-scale generative AI models approved by Beijing have been put into operation, accounting for nearly 40% of the nation's total. In mid-November, the number of users registered in top large-scale models reached 310 million, and major AI enterprises provided API services to over 14,000 institutions nationwide.
Emerging technologies such as AI, big data, cloud computing, and blockchain drive the development of the cultural industry. Since its launch in June this year, Kling AI developed by tech company Kuaishou Technology has generated over 51 million videos and 150 million photos for over 5 million users, said Zhang Di, vice president of Kuaishou Technology. The video generation platform powered by Kling will improve the efficiency of content generation and support industries such as films and television, Zhang added.
In addition, the integrated development of cultural industry such as cultural tourism has flourished. Sets for scenes from popular TV series have become ever more popular among tourists, and cultural tourism and consumption are thriving. The city has also cultivated 15 stage performance programs and supported five online programs, incorporating more new technologies for their presentation.
Digital and immersive exhibitions are drawing more visitors and helping to preserve cultural relics and treasures. Digital screens, projectors, 3D holographic projection and digital restoration technologies are utilized to showcase murals of Fahai Temple, which has a history of almost 600 years.
