The 2024 Lancang-Mekong Region Young Scientists Forum convened in Tengchong, southwest China's Yunnan province, on Dec. 6.
Over 40 young scientists from China and across the Lancang-Mekong River basin and neighboring regions gathered at the forum. It focused on artificial intelligence and sci-tech innovation, exploring AI's role in strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting socio-economic development and addressing global challenges.
Luo Hui, member of the leading Party members group and director general of the Department of International Affairs of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and 11 academics and experts attended and engaged with youth representatives.
Discussions centered on AI's transformative potential in various fields. Young scientists presented AI-driven innovations in research domains, including energy, agriculture, food security, climate change, health care, biodiversity, urban governance and engineering technology.
The forum highlighted several projects led by young Chinese scientists, featuring efforts to coordinate global data and share knowledge through programs like Urban Health and Wellbeing, Deep-time Digital Earth, Future Earth and other international big science research plans and projects, contributing to advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants launched an initiative calling for advancing innovation and tackling global challenges in the Lancang-Mekong and Southeast Asia regions.
The forum was an event of the 2024 Tengchong Scientists Forum and the Langcang-Mekong Region Science and Technology Cultural Exchanges Series. It was hosted by the China Committee of the International Science Council (ISC-CHINA) and organized by its Young Scientists Committee and the Center for New Technology Development of CAST.
