China is promoting research on new transgenetic species in an "active yet prudent" manner, while enhancing the management and safety evaluation over transgenetic products, China's Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu said on Friday.
China will also push forward applications for transgenetic technologies while maintaining scientific development, he told a press conference on the sidelines of the country's annual parliamentary session.
"It is quite clear that China shall play a part in the field of hi-tech agriculture, including bio-technological seed-breeding," said Han.
Han also pledged that China will further improve regulation and safety evaluation over transgenetic technologies.
"We have established a series of laws and regulations that cover all links, ranging from research and development to the application of the technologies," he said.
The agriculture ministry has been treating the development, management and safety evaluation of transgenetic technologies and breeding very "seriously and responsibly," in order to maintain sustainable, healthy and safe development, said Han.
