Adjust font size:

Speaking on August 15 in Beijing at the launch of a 2009 Child Safety campaign, UNICEF China representative, Dr. Yin Yin Nwe said "human trafficking is a severe and complicated crime, which needs the attention and collaboration of all society to fight against."

The “2009 Campaign for the Safe Growth of Children” was jointly launched by UNICEF and the All-China Women's Federation (ACWF), supported by the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Civil Affairs, and the Railways Ministry. The campaign is aimed at building public awareness and knowledge of the threat posed by human trafficking.

Campaign activities will include distribution of anti-trafficking leaflets and DVDs, as well as organizing meetings and training sessions to spread the anti-trafficking message. The material will be targeted especially at China’s large migrant worker population,

China’s police have also been stepping up their anti-trafficking operations. In a high-profile operation on April 9, 2009, the Ministry of Public Security rescued more than 3,000 women and children from human traffickers. The operation was part of a four-year National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking which runs from 2008 to 2012.

ACWF is a mass organization working for the advancement of Chinese women of all ethnic groups in all walks of life. Its most important mission, according to Vice Chairperson Zhen Yan, is "to represent and safeguard women's rights and interests, and promote equality between women and men."

During a long-term collaboration, ACWF and UNICEF have developed a close partnership in protecting the rights and interests of women and children.
