Northwestern China's Qinghai Province plans to build a new Yushu in five years, the provincial governor said on Wednesday.
According to a report in the Beijing Times, Qinghai's governor Luo Huining held a post-earthquake conference on Tuesday.
At the conference, he said that the rebuilding of quake-hit Yushu should be finished in three years. It will take a further two years to transform Yushu into an ecological tourist city and a leading city in the region. Located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Yushu lies in the source region of three rivers - the Yangtze, Yellow and Yalu Tsangpo rivers. Plans also exist to turn Yushu into a key city of urban-rural integration in the region.
Meanwhile, the disaster relief headquarters in Yushu told the media on Wednesday that a draft of the earthquake restoration plan for Yushu has been completed and will soon be handed to the State Council.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, the 7.1-magnitude quake, which struck the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu one week ago, had killed 2183 and injured 12,315 others.
