Study Shows Chinese Youths' Poor in Creative Ability

With the "Global Comparison of Youths' Creative Ability" as theme topic, a seminar on the national youths' creative ability was held in Shenzhen on May 14. Experts from scientific research institutions and education circle indicated the creative ability of Chinese students is inferior to those of the developed countries such as the US and Britain in spite of their high intelligence quotient.

A survey of 2,000 students at random shows: among the seven items that are used for examining youth's creative ability, Chinese students only take advantage in giving solution to questions. As for the other six items, such as the abilities on improving products, creative imagination and designing experiments, Chinese students are all poor performers compared with those from developed countries.

Development of creative ability expected to combine with learning

According to another study, personality and environment, the two factors result in Chinese students' poor creative ability.

Chinese students don't do well in self-evaluation of personality and creativity. Chinese families never encourage their children to create, discover or take risk, and communities seldom organize technology, language and music activities for youth.

Experts suggest resolving the problem by highlighting the development of the creative ability in schools and improve teachers' quality. Moreover, the development of the creative ability should be combined with the courses in teaching instead of merely relying on technological events organized in schools.
