Work on Dam Resumes

Concrete pouring at the Three Gorges Dam on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has resumed after being suspended because of a major accident early last month.

A conveyer belt machine collapsed on September 3, killing three

workers and injuring 31 others.

Concrete pouring at the site was immediately called off for investigations into the accident and repairing three other conveyer belt machines and two roof belt machines.

China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Corp has resumed production while investigating the accident, Xinhua news agency reported.

With the participation of Chinese technical workers, technicians from French and Japanese companies and representatives from Rotec Co, the American supplier of the conveyer belts, overhaul of the machines has been completed and they are back into service.

Located in Hubei Province, the Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric project, and is scheduled for completion in 2009.
