Wangfujing Ave. Mixes with Foreign Counterparts

Representatives from 14 world-famous commercial streets such as the Fifth Avenue, Champs Elysees and Kuhnau gathered in Beijing on Tuesday to discuss chances for cooperation with their Chinese counterpart, the Wangfujing Avenue, one of the country's most bustling downtown streets.

The meeting is one of the events during the Fifth China Beijing International Scientific and Technological Fair.

The Wangfujing Avenue was originally formed in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and has been the country's most famous commercial street since 1949.

It has attracted a raft of multinational corporations, famous brand stores and international management groups after undergoing three major upgrades during the past 20 years.

Fifty-four percent of visitors to Wangfujing are from other parts of China and foreign countries, according to official statistics in 2000.

Organizers say that Wangfujing aims to become famous worldwide through cooperation with other world-rank commercial streets.
