One-Thousand-Household Miao Village of Xijiang
The One-Thousand-Household Miao Village of Xijiang is located at the foot of the Leigong Mountain in the northeast of Leishan County in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. Xijiang was one of the destinations of the five large-scale migrations of the Miao people in Chinese history. The Miao people had traveled tens of thousands of miles over two or three thousand years before reaching the Leigong Mountain area and eventually settling in Xijiang. It is now home to over 1,400 households and more than 6,000 people, 99.5% of whom are Miao.
The Miao's cultural traditions are well integrated with the special geographical environment here. Their folk buildings, farming culture, and mode of production, as well as songs and dances, customs, and festivals have all been passed down from generation to generation. Today, Xijiang is a historical town of China and 13 items of intangible cultural heritage such as Miao New Year and Guzang Festival have been recognized as China's national intangible cultural heritage. Xijiang is now famous for its long history and profound culture.
