Pak-Afghan Meeting to Cool Tensions
Adjust font size:

President Pervez Musharraf said on Sunday that he will meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Turkish capital Ankara to discuss steps for the confidence building measures between the two countries and to stop accusations against each other.

"It would be my effort that talks (with Mr Karzai) are held (in)good atmosphere," President Musharraf told reporters on departure for four-nation visit.

"Grounds realities must be understood and accusations against us coming from there, coming from President Karzai must be stopped," he said.

Musharraf Sunday left for Warsaw on the first leg of his four-nation visit to Poland, Spain, Bosnia Herzegovina and Turkey.

The presidents of Pakistan and Afghanistan will visit Ankara on April 29-30 for talks under Turkey's auspices aiming to cool tensions between the two countries in the war against terror, according to a statement issued earlier by Pakistan's Foreign Ministry.

Turkey offered to host the meeting between Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai with the two countries at loggerheads in the fight against the Taliban.

Afghan officials accuse Islamabad of failing to prevent Taliban-led militants from attacking Afghanistan from their bases in Pakistan's tribal areas along their common border.

Pakistan denies the charges and says it has deployed 80,000 troops in the tribal areas on the border to hunt foreign militants and curb cross-border movements of fighters.
