Greek PM Claims Victory in Election
Adjust font size:

Greece's Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis on Sunday claimed victory in the parliamentary election, vowing to further carry out his reform plan.

"You gave us a clear mandate to continue with the reforms the country needs," Karamanlis said in a televised address to the nation.

With more than 90 percent of the vote counted in the early morning hours of Monday, Karamanlis' ruling New Democracy party was on 42.31 percent, followed by the main opposition PASOK's 38.29 percent.

If the current percentages stand, the New Democracy will hold 153 seats in the next 300-MP parliament, while the PASOK will hold 103.

Karamanlis said the Greek people have provided him and his government with a clear mandate for a "new, more dynamic beginning."

He added that he felt a "double responsibility" to avoid making mistakes in the future and to make his government better, more effective and closer to the citizens.

Less than a month after the devastating wildfires, the re-elected Karamanlis said all of the government's commitments towards the fire-ravaged areas and individuals will be met. "This government now exists, it is the one backed by a social majority with a strong political volition, one accountable to its commitments," he said.

Karamanlis said his government will emphasize efforts to fight poverty and maintain a stable economy.

Karamanlis declared victory after his main opposition the PASOK party leader George Papandreou conceded defeat.

"PASOK fought a battle and lost it," Papandreou said. "I want to thank all those who showed me their love and trust."
