FM: China rebukes Obama's remarks
Adjust font size:

China criticized US presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama's remarks of banning Chinese toys as "unobjective" and "unwise", Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang said at a regular press conference on Thursday.

A vast majority of Chinese products are reliable and safe on quality, Qin said.

"China attaches great attention to product quality. A series of laws and regulations have been put into effect and effective measures have been implemented these years," he said.

No country has products that 100 percent up to standard, Qin said. "It is not objective and unwise to say no to all products due to the low quality of a small part of products," he said.

"We should not take a one-sided approach to the issue of products' safety," Qin said.

He called on American consumers to trust Chinese products and hoped Chinese products could add festive atmosphere to them during the coming Christmas holidays.

China-India military training

The joint anti-terrorism military training between Chinese and Indian ground troops aimed to enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust, said Qin.

Qin that the training aimed to enhance mutual understanding and mutual trust between Chinese and Indian armed forces, strengthen their exchanges in the field of anti-terrorism, deter the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, and promote the development of the bilateral strategic partnership.

About 100 Indian ground troops arrived in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday for the joint anti-terrorism military training with the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

The training, code-named "Hand-in-hand-2007" will last until Dec. 27 in Yunnan capital Kunming. The PLA has also sent about 100 soldiers to attend the nine-day training, and both sides will send military observers to view the training.

Qin said China and India, as two important neighboring nations and two largest developing nations, enjoy consensus in safeguarding world peace and promoting development and cooperation.

The cooperation and consensus between the two nations was the mainstream, he noted.

As to the disputes between China and India on the boundary issue, the spokesman said both nations, as initiators of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, were aware of how to treat bilateral relations.

The two nations agreed that the boundary issue should be solved at an earlier date through dialogue and consultations in an equal and friendly manner, Qin said.

S Korea's president-elect

China hopes the two countries on the Korean peninsula will continue to improve ties through dialogue and exchanges, Qin made the comment when answering questions on the future inter-Korean relations after people in South Korea elected the new president Lee Myung-bak.

"China congratulates Mr. Lee on becoming the new president of South Korea, and is willing to work together to advance the bilateral comprehensive and cooperative partnership," he said.

China hopes that the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula will be maintained, Qin said, adding that improved ties between the two countries are beneficial to people in both countries.

"China is willing to develop the friendly cooperation with North Korea, and at the same time maintain the comprehensive and cooperative partnership with South Korea," he said.

Six-party talks

North Korea has told China's top nuclear negotiator Wu Dawei that the country will fulfill its commitments and promote the process of the six-party talks, said Qin.

Qin said North Korea briefed Wu, who has just concluded a visit to North Korea, on the implementation of the second phase action plan and said that it is ready to fulfill its commitments and promote the process of the six-party talks.

Wu, who is also vice foreign minister, paid a visit to North Korea from Dec. 17 to 19, during which he met with North Korean Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun, and held talks with his counterpart Kim Kye-gwan, exchanging views on issues related to the six-party talks, said Qin.

Wu also inspected the process of disablement of nuclear facilities in Yongbyon, saying the disablement process is going on smoothly under the procedure agreed by the six-party talks.

Myanmar issue

China said the final settlement of the Myanmar issue would reply on the efforts of the government and the people of Myanmar, stressing the international community should play a constructive role with respect to the sovereignty and opinions of the Myanmar government.

Qin noted that how to realize true dialogue and reconciliation should be negotiated and determined by the Myanmar government and other relevant parties in Myanmar since Myanmar itself is a sovereign country.

Qin said China concerns very much about the peace, stability and development of Myanmar and would like to see a stable, democratic, reconciled and developing Myanmar.

China supports special adviser of the UN Secretary General Ibrahim Gambari's mediation work, supports a bigger role to be played by the ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and is willing to strengthen communication with relevant parties including the European Union to play joint and active role in properly resolving the Myanmar issue, said Qin.

Wen to meet Bolivian FM

Qin said during Bolivian Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca's visit to China, Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will hold talks with him.

Invited by Yang, Choquehuanca is in Beijing on a five-day official visit to China.
