A Chinese company started on Monday building a hydro-power project in northern Ethiopia with a total cost of some US$224 million.
According to the China National Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering Corporation (CWHEC), the main structure of concrete dam of the Tekeze Hydro-Power Project (THPP) is designed of 185 meters high.
The construction of THPP, involving a large amount of investment, is believed to be the largest cooperative project between China and an African country.
The dam construction and installation of the power plant is to take five years to be completed.
Visiting Chinese Construction Minister Wang Guangtao and Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia Ai Ping as well as some senior Ethiopian government officials attended the operating ceremony held at the construction site.
The CWHEC is one of China's most prestigious electrical engineering companies, having undertaken nearly 80 percent of the large and medium-sized hydropower projects in China.
