Astronauts Honored as Top Science Figures

Chinese astronauts Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng have been named two of the top scientific focus figures of 2005.

The heroes of the Shenzhou VI mission received their awards at a ceremony sponsored by Science and Technology Daily on Sunday.

Prizes were also given to another nine people who made an outstanding contribution to science and technology last year.

The others honoured were Deng Zhonghan, Deng Yajun, Wang Chunsheng, Wang Houde, Shi Zhanhua, Zhang Qingjun, Zong Baoning, Zhan Jiajin and Guo Sandui.

Together they are responsible for key innovations in computer science, DNA identification, biological technology, geological exploration, manned spacecraft system design, petrochemicals, television chip research, agricultural science and other fields.

The focus figures were selected from more than 200 scientists whose stories have been published by Science and Technology Daily since April last year.

"They made remarkable achievements in promoting scientific progress and economic development," Science and Technology Daily reported.

A book on the 40 scientists who have scooped the top 10 scientific focus figures awards over the last four years was launched on Sunday.

A total of 15 major Beijing media outlets took part in the selection of the top scientific focus figures for 2005.

Zhu Ling, editor-in-chief of China Daily, along with editors from other newspapers, news agencies and radio stations presented the winner's awards at the ceremony.
