Tibet Fever Cools Down As Temperature Drops

As autumn descends on China, the Tibet tourism craze has dropped even faster than temperature. The costs of local group tours will be cut to a maximum of 1,300 yuan, compared to the average peak season price of 2,000 yuan.

Tibet in winter.

The peak season for Tibet tourism starts in June and usually ends in October, when the weather becomes cold and the amount of oxygen in the air drops from 75% in July to 55%. Starting in the fall, Tibet is not suitable for average tourists, especially those who are not in very good health.

Group tours to Tibet in the winter are still available at deeply discounted prices. According to a staff member at China Travel Service's head office, by the end of November, the prices of group tours arranged by local Tibetan travel services will range from 700 to 900 yuan, over 50% off compared to peak season prices. An eight-day Beijing-Tibet tour going by air one way and train the other will only cost about 4,500 yuan per person, about 1,000 yuan less than the price in July.

Given the lower cost, Tibet tours in winter are much more difficult and dangerous. Some scenic spots, such as those to view Mt. Everest, will be closed to tourists due to the harsh weather. Tourists are advised to consider carefully before traveling in Tibet in winter for personal safety and health concerns.
