Hong Kong pop singer Joey Yung led a tribute show to her
long-time idol Teresa Teng at Beijing's Century Theater on
Sunday.
Joey Yung worked with mainland singer Sha Baoliang to cover a
range of classics from the late Taiwan singer, who dominated the
Chinese pop scene in the 80s. A live symphony orchestra accompanied
them.
At an earlier rehearsal, the Hong Kong star told reporters she
was very happy to be invited to perform at the concert because
Teresa Teng was an idol for her and her mother.
The first annual concert in tribute to Teresa Teng was staged
last year. It starred the popular mainland band Yu Quan and "Super
Girl" Zhang Liangying.
Teresa Teng, also known as Deng Lijun, passed away in 1995 due
to an asthma attack. A slew of Chinese musicians have since
perpetuated her music. Pop diva Faye Wong even released an entire
album of cover songs in tribute to her work.
