Some of New York City's skyscrapers will turn their lights off at midnight this fall to save the lives of migrating birds who might crash into them, local media reported on Wednesday.

A half-dozen landmark skyscrapers, including the Time Warner Center, Rockefeller Center and the Empire State Building, will join the campaign, which runs from Sept. 1 to Nov. 1, the main fall migratory season, The New York Times reported.

The campaign was initiated by New York City Audubon in an effort to prevent migrating birds from plowing into buildings while on their way to warmer climes, a problem of each migratory season that leaves thousands of birds dead.

Audubon has sponsored the program since 2005, but this year it has garnered the most interest, according to the report.
