CIPG Publications — Facts and Figures

China International Publishing Group (CIPG) is China's oldest and largest professional organization involved in international publishing. Its predecessor was the Bureau of International Press, founded in October 1949, under the General Administration of Press of the Central People's Government. CIPG now has 20 subsidiaries which include seven publishing houses and five print magazines, www.keyanhelp.cn, China International Book Trading Corporation, Center for International Communication Studies, and National Translation Test and Appraisal Center. It also has 12 overseas branches in the United States, Britain, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Egypt, Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong and a number of other countries and regions, constituting a conglomerate of translation, publication, printing, distribution, Internet and multimedia business, theoretical studies and social undertakings. Every year CIPG publishes over 4,000 titles in more than 10 languages, operates nearly 30 periodicals and runs over 30 websites. Its books and periodicals are distributed to more than 180 countries and regions, and its Internet audience covers the whole globe.

Currently CIPG ranks first domestically in the field of foreign-language publishing in terms of languages covered, variety of publications, and distribution range. Among many areas addressed, the main focuses are books on today's China, Chinese culture, basic facts about China, and language learning for non-Chinese speakers. Of the 4,000 annual titles, the languages include Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, German and Japanese, and the annual distribution volume is over 40 million copies.

Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, CIPG has always been a pioneer and leader in promoting Chinese culture to the world. Distinctive for its outward orientation and international policy, CIPG has achieved many "firsts" in representing New China in the field of international publishing: It was the first to represent China at an international book fair; the first to co-publish with an overseas partner; the first to set up overseas branches to undertake local publication of foreign-language books and periodicals; and the leader, for many consecutive years, in the ranking of copyright export. The Group does business in more than 180 countries and regions, and the cultural exchange activities it carries out abroad have received a warm welcome in relevant areas.

International Publishing and Distribution

- In 2011, CIPG published 4,424 titles in 43 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, Esperanto, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese, 2,912 of which were new books, and 753 were foreign-language books — the latter accounting for almost one third of the total publishing output.

- Across its full 2011 catalogue, CIPG distributed a total of 57.22 million copies of books, a 16.5 percent increase on the previous year.

Copyright Trade

- In the field of copyright trade, CIPG has led the domestic publishing industry and occupied the top of copyright export rankings for many consecutive years, particularly in terms of quantity and quality of exported copyrights.

- In 2011, CIPG's seven publishing houses exported a total of 489 copyrights, 8.7 percent more than the figure of 2010, which was 450.

- In 2011, CIPG exported the copyrights of 312 books and 177 e-books.

- In 2011, CIPG exported copyrights to 18 countries and regions. A total of 208 copyrights were exported to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Russia and other peripheral countries and regions, which accounted for 42.5 percent of the total export volume representing an increase of 16.5 percentage points against the previous year; 271 copyrights were exported to a combination of Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Spain, Austria and other developed countries in Europe and America, making up 55.4 percent of the year's total export volume and 17.4 percentage points more than the 2010 figure.

CIPG at International Book Fairs

- Since its participation at the Leipzig International Book Expo in September 1952, CIPG has sent delegates to major international book fairs worldwide every year. For 60 years, CIPG has represented the Chinese publishing industry at nearly 300 international and regional book fairs in 60 countries and regions.

- In October 1956, the International Bookstore of CIPG represented China for the first time at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

- In 1975 the International Bookstore regained the right to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair on behalf of China, marking the beginning of China's annual participation as one of the fair's most important guests. To date CIPG has been present at every single one of the last 34 Frankfurt fairs.

- China as the Guest of Honor at the 2012 London Book Fair: CIPG will bring 972 titles to the London Book Fair, including 380 new books and 598 key books published since April 2011. The repertoire covers six major topics — China today, Chinese culture, Chinese literature, Chinese language teaching, Traditional Chinese Medicine in health care, and children's books — in 43 languages including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Thai. Books written in foreign languages will account for 75 percent of the total CIPG exhibition.

Overseas Publishing Branches

- China Media Group (US)

Representing CIPG's business in North America, the company operates China Books & Periodicals, Long River Press and Cypress Book (US) Company, and runs publishing, distribution, training and cultural exchange programs.

- China Book Trading Co., Ltd. (Germany)

Registered on June 12, 1991 in Frankfurt, Germany, the company mainly distributes Chinese books and periodicals in Germany and German-speaking areas in Switzerland and Austria. Currently a member of the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, CBT has joined the Fixed Book Price Agreement and enjoys the right to establish prices for Chinese books in German-speaking areas. It is also a user of the payment and settlement system of German book trade. In July 2002, the company purchased the Tiandi Bookstore in Hamburg, before relocating it to Frankfurt in 2007.

- Cypress Book (UK) Company

Established in London, UK in 1984, the company is responsible for the distribution of Chinese books in Britain as well as the purchase of British books and periodicals for Chinese organizations. In recent years the company has made remarkable progress, particularly in cooperating with local educational institutes to publish teaching materials for Chinese learning and supplementary reading materials. In 2007 it bought the Guanghwa Bookstore, the biggest local Chinese-language bookseller.
