Australia to raise A/H1N1 flu alert level
Adjust font size:

Australian Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon revealed the number of confirmed cases of A/H1N1 flu in Australia was 1,211 with 1,011 in Victoria alone as of Tuesday afternoon.

The nation's chief health officers may recommend raising the A/ H1N1 flu alert level to "sustain" when they meet on Wednesday to review the alert level and quarantining processes.

Roxon urged sporting organizations to exercise caution before they followed the move by Swimming Australia to cancel this weekend's grand prix meet in Melbourne because of the A/H1N1 flu outbreak.

The cancellation of any such event is regrettable, and the organizers will be warned of those events to base their decisions on medical advice, Roxon said.

"The best health advice is that there is clearly no need to restrict domestic travel and this is not an appropriate or proportionate response," she said.

However, Roxon said people with the A/H1N1 virus in Australia have so far displayed only mild symptoms.
