Int'l community called to help Afghanistan maintain stability
Adjust font size:

China on Tuesday called on the international community to work together helping Afghanistan achieve stability and economic growth.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a regular press conference that now the domestic situation in Afghanistan comes to a crucial crossroads.

He said an international meeting on Afghanistan issue was held in Hague Tuesday, at which China will expound its principle and proposition on related issues.

"The international community should work together to coordinate and take comprehensive measures to push forward the peace process and economic restructuring in Afghanistan," Qin said.

Afghanistan is scheduled to hold presidential and provincial elections in August amid deteriorating security conditions and a rising Taliban-led insurgency.

Senior officials from nearly 90 countries are gathering in Hague for a U.N.-backed conference on Afghanistan on Tuesday. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei was sent to attend the meeting.

The UN-sponsored conference in Hague will draw members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the International Security Assistance Force, donors and nations that have regional, strategic and transit positions vis-a-vis Afghanistan, and international organizations, to contribute to stabilizing Afghanistan and fighting insurgency.

Responding to a question on China-Afghanistan cooperation on resources, Qin said the two countries are friendly neighbors and cooperate on economy and trade.

"Currently, a peaceful, stable and developmental Afghanistan is the biggest resources for China," Qin said.
