DPRK opposes UN resolution, vows to pursue more nuclear weapons
Adjust font size:

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) said on Saturday it "opposed and denounced" United Nations' new resolution, vowing to produce more nuclear weapons.

In response to the U.N. Resolution 1874, the DPRK will " weaponize all plutonium newly extracted," said a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry.

The DPRK will also start enriching uranium, it added.

The statement warned that "if U.S. and its followers attempted to blockade the DPRK," the DPRK will oppose it with "resolute military actions."

The DPRK has reprocessed one third of the stockpile of the spent rods, the statement said. The DPRK decided to produce light-water reactor by its own force and has "successfully developed the uranium enrichment technology," it added, saying it has "pushed the uranium enrichment into the phase of experiment."

The DPRK "absolutely won't abandon nuclear weapon", the statement said. No matter others admit or not the DPRK has possessed the nuclear weapons, it will not care, it said.

The U.N. resolution was "another vile product of the U.S.-led offensive of international pressure aimed at undermining the DPRK's ideology and its system chosen by its people by disarming the DPRK and suffocating its economy," the statement said, adding that its second nuclear test was "a self-defensive measure as it was conducted to cope with such hostile acts of the U.S.."

The U.N. Security Council on Friday unanimously approved wider sanctions against the DPRK over its May 25 nuclear test.

The sanctions resolution banned all weapons exports from the DPRK and most arms imports into the country. It authorized U.N. member states to inspect DPRK's sea, air and land cargo, requiring them to seize and destroy any goods transported in violation of the sanctions.

The resolution condemned "in the strongest terms" the recent nuclear test conducted by the DPRK and demanded that the country "not conduct any further nuclear test or any launch using ballistic missile technology."
