Vendors and restaurants in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, have been selling potentially unqualified pork with chemical additives as mutton, Modern Express reports. Many customers of the product, who are mostly small restaurants specializing in chafing-dish cuisine, say that the sliced mutton rolls they bought are actually mutton-flavored pork, and vendors have confirmed their reports. |
Wholesalers of the "mutton" say the restaurants buy the pork at less than 5 yuan per box and then sell them as mutton at their restaurants for more than twice the price they paid. One vendor said he doesn't eat the meat for fear of his health, though a Nanjing Agriculture University professor said the chemical additives may not actually be harmful. The professor warned that any danger from the additives would come from masking the smell of bad or spoiled meat. |
