Heroes from Wenchuan Quake visit Olympic venues
Adjust font size:

In the moist air of Saturday morning, over 40 heroes visited Beijing's Tian'anmen Tower, "Bird's Nest," and "Water Cube," gasping in admiration of the capital's capability in creating such impressive structures, and wishing the Beijing Games complete success.

According to Beijing Daily, these visitors, whose courage was displayed in the earthquake-devastated area of southwestern China, climbed Tian'anmen Tower at 8:40 yesterday morning. The internal decoration of the structure moved many. "At Tian'anmen Tower, I can feel the country's strength and the people's unity. Even though the earthquake destroyed our homes and took tens of thousands of our brothers' and sisters' lives, I believe that under the strong leadership of the central government and the help of people all over the country, we will definitely rebuild our homes," one visitor said.

Another guest described the green that he saw everywhere in Beijing, telling reporters that he felt confident that the city would host a high-quality Olympics with distinguishing features.

When the earthquake destroyed roads leading to some towns in Sichuan Province, Huang Jinpo led a group that helped to resurrect the path 12 hours ahead of schedule, allowing supplies and help to get through. "During the relief efforts, we deeply felt the country's strength…many more people were saved because of the groups of people that came to help, already prepared," Huang said.

Jiang Min, with the Pengzhou city police department in Sichuan Province, hopes to hurry back to Sichuan as soon as possible, so that she can continue to help out with relief efforts, and work from her position to support the Beijing Games.

A visit to the "Bird's Nest" and "Water Cube" was on the itinerary for later that day.

The group was entertained by a show at the National Grand Theater on Wednesday evening.
