Table Tennis Day 8 Afternoon/ Evening Session Review: No mercy as China and Slovakia secure gold medals
Adjust font size:

China and Slovakia clinched gold medals in the second session of play on the penultimate day of the Table Tennis action at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games at the Peking University Gymnasium.

China beat Italy in the final of Women's Classes 1/3 by three matches to one, while in Men's Classes 1/2, Slovakia overcame France by three matches to nil.

The bronze medal contests saw France record a three-nil win over Great Britain, as Korea won by the same margin against Austria.

Michela Brunelli gave Italy the perfect start against China by beating Liu Jing, but that was the European country's only success. Li Qian of China overcame Clara Podda, teamed with Liu to win the Doubles and then brought matters to an end with victory over Brunelli.

In the bronze medal fixture the French were equally impressive.

Isabelle Lafaye-Marziou of France overcame Cathy Mitton of Great Britain in the opening contest, Fanny Bertrand followed suit by defeating Dzaier Neil and, with Stephanie Mariage partnering Lafaye-Marziou, the duo defeated Mitton and Neil to end proceedings.

Similarly, in the Men's Team Classes 1/2 event, the victors were in no mood for charity.

Jan Riapos of Slovakia accounted for Stephane Molliens in the final against France, Rastislav Revucky emulated his teammate's efforts in downing Vincent Boury and, with Riapos and Molliens in harmony, the Doubles against Revucky and Boury was duly secured.

It was a convincing score line and it was the same for the Republic of Korea against Austria.

Kim Kong-yong of the Republic of Korea overcame Andreas Vevera, before Kim Kyung-mook then doomed Austria to defeat with victory over Vevera, the gold medalist in Men's Individual Class 1.

Matters came to a conclusion with Kim Kong-Yong and Kim Kyung-Mook taking out Vevera and Hans Ruep to secure success.
