Hamburg will take a one goal advantage to Eindhoven after Marcell Jansen scored the only goal against the Dutch team in the Europa League on Thursday. Berlin tied with Lissabon thanks to an own goal.
Hamburg and Eindhoven staged an unspectacular first half, both teams kept their defence tight to neutralize offensive actions.
Hamburg needed 26 minutes to mark the opener by a penalty, which was awarded when Eindhoven defender Stanislav Manolev tackled Hamburg striker Mladen Petric inside the box. Defender Marcell Jansen converted into bottom left to bring his team up front.
After interval both teams staged an evenly balanced match. Hamburg continued to search for the second goal while Eindhoven was short on accurancy and unable to turn around within the final whistle.
The two teams will meet again in Eindhoven on February 25.
Drop zone team Berlin was held to a 1-1 draw at first leg against Benfica Lissabon. Lissabon remains undefeated in 13 matches while Berlin waits for their first victory after five matches.
Lissabon striker Angel di Maria stunned Berlin with an early lead at the 4th minute. Berlin equalized due to an own goal by Lissabon midfielder Javi Garcia with 33 minutes into the match.
Return match will take place in Lissabon at the 25th of February.
