Ivica Dragutinovic will have to miss the rest of the La Liga season for Sevilla and the World Cup for Serbia due to injury.
The 34-year-old defender tore his Achilles tendon during training on Thursday, according to his Spanish first division club.
"The Serb tore his left Achilles tendon and in this way says good-bye to a campaign where be was perfoming superbly," read a statement of Sevilla.
"If there is a person who does not deserve an injury, although nobody deserves one, it was Drago, for everything he has done and what he mean to the dressing room," said Sevilla captain Andres Palop.
Dragutinovic will travel to Finland to be examined by Sakari Orava, who operated on England's David Beckham last month. His national teammates will play in World Cup Group D against Austria, Germany and Ghana.
