American Swimming star Michael Phelps won the 200 meter butterfly on the first day of the Paris Open on Saturday.
Phelps led from the start to finish in 1 minute and 55.70 seconds. Christophe Lebon of France edged his compatriot Jordan Coelho to finish second in 1:59.01.
Phelps, who won eight gold medals at Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, finished a disappointing eighth place in 49.70 in the 100m freesytle final earlier the day. Frenchman Fabien Gilot took the first in 48.65.
"I think as a whole, for the day, it's not terrible," Phelps said. "I'm more happy with my fly. I think there is still a lot of work to do."
Phelps, who turns 25 at the end of June, will also compete in the 200m freestyle and the 200m individual medley on Sunday.
"I will try to recover as much as I can," Phelps said. "It's gonna be a tough day."
