World No. 1 Roger Federer claimed swift victory over Robby Ginepri of the United States 7-6(2), 6-4 on Tuesday to make through to the third round of the Madrid Masters tennis event.

The Swiss, who had not played competitively since winning his fourth United States Open title in September, showed a few weaknesses in his game, but remained a long way ahead of his 72-ranked rival.

Federer had to play two tie-breakers against Ginepri in the seventh game of the first set, but thanks to an ace and a service point he dominated the situation.

In the second set, Federer breezily went 4-2 ahead and served 10 aces after breaking the American's service in the eighth game.

Federer will next play the winner between Argentina's Agustin Calleri and Guillermo Canas on Wednesday.

In Tuesday's play, Calleri made a dramatic fightback against Russia's Dimitry Tursunov, winning 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 to appoint the Canas meet.

The qualifier, a native to Argentine town Rio Cuarto who is ranked 50th in the world, suffered a slow beginning against Tursunov but took his chance as his Russian opponent failed to follow through on his early lead.

Calleri, however, did not give up when fighting for survival in the second set tie-break. He played solidly under pressure and won the third and fourth point in the tie-break to win the set.

Also on Tuesday, Spain's Nicolas Almagro defeated France's Fabrice Santoro to set up a third round match against the competition's fifth seed Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, who reached the final in 2006.

Murcia-born Almagro crushed Santoro in less than an hour and won in straight sets of 6-4, 6-4.

In his only previous duel against Gonzalez, Almagro lost in 2005's Vina del Mar tournament.

Meanwhile, Russia's Nikolay Davydenco pulled out of the masters tournament due to an elbow injury.

The world No. 4 had been due to play Croatia's Ivo Karlovic after beating compatriot Marat Safin 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.
