On March 9, 1961, the first guinea pig astronaut was sent into space with the Soviet Sputnik 9 spacecraft, along with a dog, several mice, reptiles and a dummy cosmonaut. All of the astronauts returned safely to Earth following the mission.
China launched the biosatellite FSW-1 No.3 on October 5, 1990, containing a collection of 60 plants and animals included some guinea pigs. The biosatellite was successfully recovered after eight days.
