Mardi Gras Carnival, New Orleans, USA |
Location: New Orleans, USA
Time: February-March for two weeks
Mardi Gras Carnival is one of the most popular American festivals that originated during the mid 1800s. It starts on Epiphany (Jan. 6) and ends on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras in French), the day before Ash Wednesday, for people to enjoy the last days of eating richer, fatty foods before the Lenten season begins.
The two-week celebration is the climax of the carnival, which features parades, masked balls, Nawlins music, Cajun cuisine and Creole food. Strings of beads and toys are thrown from floats to parade-goers. More than four million people visit New Orleans during the carnival each year.
The carnival has now turned into a big stage for people to present and share various cultures together. It is known as "the greatest free party on the Earth."
