Poveglia is a small island located in northern Italy. A few centuries ago, the island was a temporary leper confinement station. In the 20th century, the island was again used as a quarantine station. In 1922, the existing buildings were converted into an asylum for the long-term care of the mentally ill. The island is now regarded as one of the most horrible haunted places in the world. Although it is picturesque, it is not yet open to the public. However, the Italian government announced it would auction a 99-year lease of Poveglia, in the hope that the buyer would redevelop the island.
