An update now from the earthquake zone in Yushu up in the northwest. As the emergency work continues.. Yulin Zhou looks at a new problem: one caused by the high altitude.
I have met Li Xianghui at the clinic, she is from the city of Chongqing. She has been helping a medical team since the earthquake struck. She says that she's been suffering from altitude sickness for a couple of days.
Volunteer Li Xianghui said, "I am feeling sick, I cannot breath, at the same time, I have a very bad headache, it feels as though I cannot do anything, not even walk."
A doctor at the clinic has told me that they have had many patients like that.
A doctor said, "It is quite a problem. We treat more than ten patients suffering from altitude sickness every day, some suffer quite badly and need to be given oxygen."
But the majority of all the relief teams only had slight symptoms, such as dizziness and shortness of breath. To cope with altitude sickness, most of them have been told to carry extra medicine as well as oxygen supplies. Meanwhile, the provincial government has also increased the supply of oxygen concentrators and oxygen tanks in Yushu.
Luo Huining, governor of Qinghai Province, said, "The health of relief team members is paramount, we will make sure that they are in good condition. We have now organized some experienced doctors to go through the relief teams and give all of them a checkup."
"Yushu is now starting its reconstruction phase.........However, given the progress made in two weeks since the earthquake struck, the signs are that a successful reconstruction will be achieved.
