Governments at all levels have shifted into high gear in a campus security clampdown after a string of school attacks. They have called for more police patrols near campuses, 24-hour ID checks at school gates. And, even police dogs have been deployed at some schools.
High level security like this can be seen at many schools in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province. While school is in session, security is even tighter.
Wu Qian, a headmaster of primary school in Guangzhou, said, "We have a security guard at the gate, and another one patrolling around five meters away. In addition, a teacher stands 2 to 5 meters inside the gate to help." This is the case in many other provinces in China.
Police officer, Li Benchun's work begins early in the morning when students arrive at the primary school in Qingdao, Shandong Province. Li said, "I'm very busy because there are many people just before classes begin making the traffic very intense. We have to help the teachers to keep order at the gate and prevent any sort of attack on the students."
Li says he spends four hours patrolling at the school gate every day. For the students and parents, Li's job is very important. "We feel safe because we have their protection." a student said.
A parent Ms. Yin said "We were worried days ago. My child is just a first grader. He went to school by himself because I don't have time to accompany him. But ever since the tragedy, we started to send him to school. Now the police are here, we feel much more relieved."
At educational institutions across the nation, cameras and alarm systems are being installed. The move comes after a string of attacks on school and kindergarten children last week, injuring 50 students and several teachers.
