Chinese TV, Internet and phone users will soon be able to access all 3, through a single line. The government has announced a pilot scheme to integrate the systems. Twelve cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian and Shenzhen were approved for the pilot program, known as the "three networks integration".
The program aims to make the systems compatible and allow users to make telephone calls, surf the Internet and watch television through only one cable or wireless portal. Currently, TV, telecom and Internet networks are separate.
The State Council said in January the program would be accelerated through pilot projects from 2010 to 2012. It vowed to achieve comprehensive integration by 2015.
