Early Sunday morning the Yangtze River bank in Nanjing City of east China's Jiangsu Province burst. After 4 hours, emergency crews were able to repair the damage.
The incident happened about 200 meters from the entrance of the Gaowang river to the Yangtze.
Sunday morning, a patrol group found a 13 meter crack. Around 7 o'clock, about 1,000 soldiers of Nanjing Garrison rushed to fix the problem.
With the river flowing too fast, the soldiers were carried away to the outside part of the dyke in mere minutes.
Not faraway is a populated village and the building site of the highway from Beijing to Shanghai.
In order to control the situation as soon as possible, the directors pushed a sunken ship and heavy vehicles into the river to stop it. Heavy machines were also used to carry stones and bags of sand. The soldiers were asked to increased the height of the dyke.
After 4 hours, around 11 o'clock, the bank was mended. Many soldiers are staying near the dyke to prevent any further potential accidents.
While in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, more rainfall is forecast in the coming days, and the Three Gorges Dam on the river is expected to face its biggest challenge since its establishment in 2006.
