In Russia, where the death toll from a suicide blast in the country's restive North Caucasus has climbed to 17. The blast ripped through a busy market, injuring 133 others. President Dmitry Medvedev has vowed to punish those behind the attack.
The attacker detonated his explosives as he drove by the main entrance to the market in Vladikavkaz, capital of North Ossetia province.
So far, no one claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Konstantin Uskov, Chief investigator of South Ossetia Police, said, "Earlier, there was the threat of a second blast. But explosive specialists checked the area and ruled out any danger. A criminal investigation is underway into terrorism and the possession of illegal explosives."
The attack came as Muslims prepare to celebrate the Eid holiday, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
