China's Disease Control and Prevention Center reports that the superbug NDM-1 has been found in three test samples obtained from hospital patients. However, it's not yet clear whether their conditions are a direct result of the drug-resistant bacteria.
Two samples were taken from newborn babies in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Both infants were underweight, and had developed diarrhea and respiratory symptoms two days after birth. The other case involves a sample taken from an 83-year-old in east China's Fujian Province. The patient suffered from terminal lung cancer, and died shortly after being discharged from hospital. No cases of death from the superbug have been reported in the Chinese mainland.
