A three-wheeled motorcycle truck, taking 20 primary children to school, plunged into a creek on Monday morning, leaving 14 dead and 6 injured.
The accident happened in Songjiang Township, located in central China's Hunan Province. Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, but early indications are citing foggy weather at the time of the tragedy. Local authorities announced that the driver has been detained, and 6 government officials have also been removed from their posts.
Special groups have also been established to counsel parents and take care of compensation. The three-wheeled vehicle that was involved in the accident, was originally designed for agricultural use, but was modified to take children from nearby villages to school.
Parents reportedly paid the driver 200 yuan each semester. On Tuesday, the Education Ministry spokeswoman, Xu Mei, asked the public to pay close attention to student safety.
