Icy weather and freezing rain continue to pelt five provincial regions across South China. The wild weather has caused massive chaos on expressways, damaged power facilities and otherwise disrupted daily life.
The deep freeze has iced Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces and Chongqing Municipality over the past few days. The Ministry of Civil Affairs says one man has died because of the cold. 3.8 million people have been affected and nearly 60,000 have been forced to leave their damaged homes. The harsh weather has resulted in economic losses of 1.3 billion yuan. Traffic has resumed on some roads. The weather bureau forecasts the freeze will continue, with three cold snaps expected in the coming week.
