The leadership of Egypt's ruling National Democratic Party has resigned. This includes President Hosni Mubarak's son, Gamal.
Egypt's state television announced the resignations, but still identified Mubarak as president of the ruling party in a sign he would remain in authority. His son Gamal Mubarak was touted as heir to his father's presidency.
However, his resignation as the NDP's Policy Secretariat rules him out as the party's presidential candidate under the country's existing constitution. State television also named the new Secretary-General as Hossam Badrawi, who is seen as a member of the liberal wing of the party. The military has so far given no hint of its stance on the ruling party leadership change.
